The Beaches of Florianopolis
Boasting a collection of over 40 excellent beaches, there really is often only one reason for visiting Florianopolis. Bolstered by the scorching sun and warm Atlantic waters, the island is a beach lovers dream and attracts tourists of every description throughout the calendar year. Yet, with so many places to choose from how do you decide which beach is going to be the best for you.
Like any coastal resort, each beach here has its own unique character and, therefore, it is necessary to weigh up the pros and cons before making the final decision. The biggest factors to consider generally include: hotel standards, clientele, Florianopolis nightlife, Surf and water safety. Although in theory the beaches are open to all, over the years each has developed its own atmosphere and therefore attracts a certain kind of visitor.
Take the northern beaches of Canasvieiras and Jurere Tadicional. With calm waters and a relaxed lifestyle they are popular with elderly visitors and families looking for a peaceful break away from boisterous crowds. In stark contrast Jurere Internacinal, only a short hop from Jurere Tradicional, is considered to be the jetsetter hotspot of Brazil and home to lavish villas and the rich and famous looking to party in luxury.
Over on the east side of the island, beach life also varies differently. Praia Mole is one of the top Surfing spots in Florianopolis and draws in a hip, beach-loving crowd during peak season. Within a few metres the vibe can change and a stones throw from Praia Mole, Praia da Galhete is the place to be for those who like to walk free from the shackles of clothing. Not for the prudent or feint-hearted but perhaps worth checking out for an afternoon. North along the coast from here, Praia do Mocambique is another favourite surf spot with large waves spilling out onto a sweeping stretch of unspoilt sand.
For the large part Florianopolis is a modern, thriving beach resort yet, as many travel guides will point out, it is still possible to find traditional towns that remain far removed from commercialisation. Keen fishermen or anyone interested in experience a customary fishing community will bask in the prevailing traditions of Pantano do Sul. Alongside its southern counterpart Ribeirao da Ilha, the beach promotes the simple, laidback vibe that epitomises beach life.
